Katemfe Fruit Extract
Recent research suggests that thaumatin, a natural sweetener from the West African Katemfe fruit, may help reduce inflammation in the stomach. When digested, it breaks down into peptides that activate bitter taste receptors in the gut, which may lower levels of an inflammatory marker called IL-17A. These findings point to possible health benefits beyond sweetness.¹
Because thaumatin is naturally sweet but doesn’t raise blood sugar levels, it doesn’t promote tooth decay. This makes it a tooth-friendly alternative to sugar and a better option for supporting oral health.²
While studies on thaumatin’s direct effect on gut bacteria are still emerging, its low glycemic index means it doesn’t feed harmful sugar-loving bacteria. This may help support a more balanced gut environment compared to high-sugar alternatives.³
Thaumatin is generally recognised as safe for individuals with diabetes, as it has no significant effect on blood glucose or insulin levels. Because it is intensely sweet and used in very small amounts, it contributes negligible calories and does not impact glycaemic control.⁴ ⁵
Derived from the katemfe fruit, thaumatin is a natural sweetening protein that is approximately 2,000 to 3,000 times sweeter than sugar. It is commonly used in food and beverage products as a low-calorie sweetener.⁶
